Edoardo Recchi Sr. (Gabriele Ferzetti) is the patriarch of a wealthy Italian family who've amassed a significant fortune over the years through shrewd investments in manufacturing. Edoardo has a beautiful wife, Allegra (Marisa Berenson), and they have four grown children -- Tancredi (Pippo Delbono), Edoardo Jr. (Flavio Parenti), Gianluca (Mattia Zaccaro), and Elisabetta (Alba Rohrwacher). The family gathers for a reunion at Edoardo and Allegra's villa in Milan, with Tancredi's wife, Emma (Tilda Swinton), and Antonio (Edoardo Gabbriellini), a chef planning on going into business with Edoardo, also in attendance. But the happy gathering takes a somber turn when Edoardo suddenly dies while having lunch with the family. The death takes the family by surprise, and causes nearly everyone to reassess themselves and their lives. In the months that follow, Allegra discovers that Elisabetta is a lesbian, and deals with new desires of her own when she falls in love with Antonio. Tancredi finds that his relationship with Emma is not as stable as it once was as he struggles to keep up the elegant image of the Recchi name. And Edoardo Jr., now controlling much of the family business, is disappointed with how changing styles of business have eroded the company's dignity and good name. IO SONO L'AMORE (aka I AM LOVE) was an official selection at the 2009 Venice International Film Festival.
| 8: The Mormon Proposition opens June 18th, 2010 (limited) June 1, 2010 at 2:46 AM |
| In 2008, California voters were asked to weigh in on Proposition 8, a ballot measure that would amend the state constitution to specify that marriage was legal only between a man and a woman, effectively ending the drive to bring gay marriage to California. Proposition 8 was passed, the first time California voters had agreed to limit civil rights by law, and among its most vocal supporters were members of the Church of Jesus Christ and Later-Day Saints, better known as the Mormons. Mormon groups contributed $22 million to advertising campaigns against Prop 8, and some Mormon activists took part in inflammatory disinformation campaigns about the possible effects of making gay marriage legal. Filmmakers Reed Cowan and Steven Greenstreet examine the role of the Mormon church in the battle against same-sex marriage in the documentary 8: THE MORMON PROPOSITION, as well as examining Mormon doctrine on homosexuality (including church-approved programs to "cure" homosexuality), suicide rates among gay teens in Mormon communities, and misleading comments from Mormon leaders on the impact of Prop 8 on religious freedoms. 8: THE MORMON PROPOSITION received its world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. | |
| Let It Rain opens June 1, 2010 at 2:46 AM |
| The acclaimed filmmaking team of Agnes Jaoui and Jean-Pierre Bacri (LOOK AT ME, THE TASTE OF OTHERS) returns for another Woody Allen-esque dramedy of manners. Jaoui plays Agathe Villanova, a successful feminist and author who is about to throw her hat into the political ring. Before she does that, she heads to the south of France to visit her childhood home and help her sister, Florence (Pascale Arbillot), take care of some family affairs. Once there, Agathe is approached by bumbling documentary filmmaker Michel Ronsard (Bacri) and his new partner, Karim (Jamel Debbouze)--who happens to be the son of Agathe's lifelong family maid, Mimouna (Mimouna Hadji)--who want to make a video profile of her. Against her better judgment, she accepts. As the days wear on, the assembled characters find themselves wrapped up in crises of their own.

With LET IT RAIN, Jaoui reconfirms her ability to craft a rich, fully developed narrative that bristles with humor. This time around, she adds further dramatic dimension to the drama by introducing elements of racism and classism into the story. Yet just when the situation appears to be too dire, she allows humor to return. It's a delicate balancing act, but with the help of Bacri and her accomplished cast, she makes it seem effortless and easy. LET IT RAIN makes for some thoughtfully entertaining viewing.
