Square Enix preps new portable Kingdom Hearts, Parasite Eve
June 9, 2010 at 12:45 PM

Publisher bringing Disney crossover back to DS with Re:coded, rekindling survival horror franchise with The 3rd Birthday for PSP.

When the Electronic Entertainment Expo kicks off in Los Angeles next week, Square Enix will be showing off two new portable installments in a pair of its familiar franchises. The publisher today revealed its lineup of games for the show, in the process announcing Kingdom Hearts Re:coded for the DS and a domestic release for the Parasite Eve PSP spin-off The 3rd Birthday.

An action role-playing game set after the events of Kingdom Hearts II, Re:coded revolves around a second Sora found inside the journal Jiminy Cricket kept of their previous adventures. The game is being developed with the help of h.a.n.d. Inc., the studio behind last year's well-regarded DS entry in the series, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. The game does not have a release window as of yet.

The 3rd Birthday was originally announced at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show, but Square Enix has previously given little indication that the action RPG would be released overseas. The game stars Parasite Eve protagonist Aya Brea, who plays a key role in staving off an invasion of monsters that strikes Manhattan.

Both games have ties to Square Enix's mobile phone efforts. The 3rd Birthday was originally planned to launch on phones, as well as on the PSP, but was later made an exclusive for Sony's handheld. And while the publisher hasn't offered much in the way of details on Re:coded, it at least shares the primary plot of the 2008 mobile phone game Kingdom Hearts: Coded. Square Enix used the same renaming convention once before, with Kingdom Hears Re: Chain of Memories for the PlayStation 2, a complete 3D redesign of the Chain of Memories Game Boy Advance title.

FIFA 11 kicking off this autumn
June 9, 2010 at 5:45 AM

New Personality+ system maps players' real-life skills to the virtual pitch, while a new Pro Passing system determines pass accuracy directly from a gamer's ability on the controls.

FIFA 11 is set for release this autumn on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, PSP and mobile, EA announced today. The game's key new feature is something the publisher has dubbed "Personality+." It distinguishes individual footballers from one another by utilising a database that evaluates and grades each player’s skill-set over 36 attributes and 57 traits. This means a footballers' real life skills will be reflected in the game. For example, Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta will utilise tighter turns and close control to dribble through defences, while Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney will hold off defenders and strike shots from distance with pace.

The database used in Personality+ is said to have been built up by a network of 1,700 scouts from around the world, and will be integrated into every area of the game. Goalkeepers will also be getting in on the action, with their real-life traits--whether acrobatic or traditional--translated to the virtual pitch. Personality+ will be combined with new body types and player models to further enhance the realism of the game.

EA will also introduce a new Pro Passing system, which determines pass accuracy directly from a gamer's ability on the controls. The player's skill will be combined with the situation and urgency on the pitch to create more realistic experience. There will also be new passing types such as swerve, which will will enable players to make a safer and more effective plays.

FIFA 11 will once again be going up against Konami's Pro Evolution soccer series, which is also set for an autumn release. Pro Evo has suffered at the hands of FIFA of late, receiving less than enthusiastic review scores. FIFA, meanwhile, has enjoyed both critical and commercial success, with the 2010 iteration of the game selling over 10 million copies. The latest release, 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, jumped straight to the top of the UK charts when it was released back in April.

EA has promised to reveal more new features of the game in the coming months. It has also invited fans to give their feedback and suggestions to the developers on the FIFA Facebook fan page.
