Okamiden Updated Hands-On: Toad Bashing
June 11, 2010 at 7:20 PM

We get an exclusive look at the boss battle in the E3 demo of Capcom's DS action role-playing game.

While the original Okami wasn't a megahit when it was released in 2006, the gorgeous platformer garnered itself an enthusiastic fan base. The game's unique story, revolving around a sun god who sets out to free the land from evil, struck a chord with critics and fans alike, which led Capcom to publish an enhanced version on the Wii in 2008 that took advantage of the system's unique control scheme. The Wii game's reception, in turn, has led to the upcoming Okamiden, a proper sequel, for the DS. In our last look at Okamiden, we got a feel for how the DS sequel was capturing the feel of the original Okami. Although the title has shifted from console to Nintendo's portable hardware, the game isn't missing much in the way of gameplay options. In fact, it's gaining a few new twists that add to the experience. Our latest look at the game, an advance run through the demo Capcom will be showing at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, picks up where our last experience left off and pitted us against Master Anura, the massive toad boss who loomed over us at the end of the demo we played at Captivate.

See Chibiterasu and Kuni in action!

The setup for the battle was brief. The E3 demo picks up shortly before the end of the sequence we played at Captivate, which found the game's main character, Chibiterasu, the offspring of the original Okami's main character, Amaterasu, dropping into a cave with his traveling buddy, Kuni, son of master swordsman Susano, also from the original game. The two don't have much time to soak up their surroundings before Master Anura rises up out of a pool of water and confronts them. After a brief bit of dialogue where the amphibian deity takes some cheap shots at the pair, the battle is on.

Combat in the sequence is similar to the fights we tried against regular foes, in that you'll be dodging attacks and using the celestial brush mechanic to slash your moist foe's weak spots. Things get trickier as the battle progresses and Anura's attacks change, forcing you to swap tactics and multitask between controlling Chibiterasu and Kuni at the same time. You'll have to direct Kuni to perform some tasks during the battle using the guidance brush technique and also protect him from Anura. The battle was tricky but satisfying and offered a nice showcase for the game's unique DS control scheme. Once the toad was toast, the demo ended.

The visuals in the demo continued to stick to the high quality we've come to expect from the game, even at this incomplete stage. The game's art direction leans toward the Japanese watercolor style the Okami games are known for. While there have been some tweaks to the visuals to take into account the DS's limitations, the game looks pretty close to the console game.

While the demo featured just a sliver of new content from when we saw it last, we're still more than pleased by the direction Okamiden is going in. The story is interesting, Chibiterasu is adorable, and the gameplay feels well in line with what we'd want out of a new Okami game. Okamiden is slated to ship for the Nintendo DS in 2011.

Shippin' Out June 13-19: Toy Story 3
June 11, 2010 at 6:55 PM

Disney Interactive Studios' motion picture tie-in, Nintendo's 100 Classic Books, World War II submarine game Naval Assault: The Killing Tide highlight a slow week.

The 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo kicks off this coming week in Los Angeles, and the industry clearly has the show at the top of its priority list. Unlike past weeks, which saw the release of high-profile add-on content and games including Modern Warfare 2's second map pack, Konami's Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and Green Day: Rock Band, this week sees fewer new releases in both number and prominence.

Pixar's third installment in the Toy Story series comes to theaters this Friday, and Avalanche Software joins in on the animated action with a video game debuting Tuesday. Toy Story 3: The Video Game comes to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, DS, PC, and Wii, on June 15, three days before the animated flick hits theaters. The game isn't directly tied to the film's narrative, so those who pick up the game on launch day needn't fear spoiling the film for themselves.

One other title releasing this week is 505 Games' Naval Assault: The Killing Tide, a World War II submarine combat Xbox 360 exclusive, debuting June 15. The game has 30 missions set in the North Atlantic, and multiplayer modes for up to four players.

For the portable gamer, Nintendo releases 100 Classic Books on Monday June 14. As its name suggests, this pocket-sized library has 100 novels packed-in, from literary greats William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and more.

Also appearing Tuesday is Superbike World Championship SBK for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. This latest installment in the superbike series, from Black Bean Games, is a fully licensed title, and includes the World Superbike Championship's cars, tracks, teams, and game modes.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later in the week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

Nintendo E3 2010 Press Briefing--begins 9 a.m. PDT, Tuesday, June 15
June 11, 2010 at 3:51 PM

The Mario Factory's conference is expected to yield new details on the upcoming Wii Zelda game, the Wii Vitality Sensor, and the 3DS--with plenty of Reggie, of course.

LOS ANGELES--At the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo had a grab bag of goodies for its devout following. The cash-flush Wii-maker used its briefing to unveil the Wii Vitality Sensor, a finger-worn pulse reader that will let players control some as-yet-unseen games with their biorhythms. The Team Ninja-developed Metroid: Other M was also unveiled at the event, as were Wii Fit Plus, Mario & Luigi RPG: Bowser's Inside Story, and Golden Sun DS. New Super Mario Bros. Wii also debuted at the briefing and went on to sell more than 14 million units.

Bright and early on the morning of Tuesday, June 15, Nintendo will once again gather the gaming press and assorted industry types to show off its latest slate of wares. Front and center will be the 3DS, a new iteration in its 129-million-unit-selling handheld line, which will offer 3D graphics without the need for glasses. Besides the requisite onstage braggadocio from Nintendo of America president and chief operating officer Reggie Fils-Aime, the conference will probably offer a closer look at the new Wii Legend of Zelda game, due out later this year.

Come back Tuesday morning for a live blog of Nintendo's press briefing, or watch a live video stream of it on GameSpot's E3 2010 event page.

The Live Blog is scheduled to begin Jun 15, 2010 at 9:00AM PDT
